Director of Transportation

REPORTS TO:  CFO/Assistant Superintendent - Finance & Facilities

POSITION SUMMARY: Performs duties to supervise the total operation of the transportation department for the benefit of students, by observing the policies adopted by the Board of Education and rules and regulations of the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Missouri Department of Transportation, and United States Department of Transportation governing student transportation.

FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

 Essential Functions

  1. Supervises the Assistant Director, office staff, and garage personnel; schedules work, conducts and /or supervises in-service training for transportation employees.
  2. Cooperates with parents and students to resolve transportation complaints; resolves problems or complaints of patrons and parents of the District involving transportation, including routes, stops, driver’s conduct and measurements pertaining to eligible bus riders.
  3. Recommends personnel to be employed and dismissed and the necessary adjustments to personnel policies with regard to the transportation department.
  4. Evaluates personnel under his/her supervision for the purpose of performance improvement.
  5. Final departmental responsibility for district bus routing decisions.
  6. Provide documentation and data to the business office for annual transportation claims and district audits.
  7. Writes specifications and makes recommendations, when needed, for bid items.
  8. Constructs mileage point maps for individual schools and transmits mileage point information to the building principal.
  9. Participates as a member of the accident review committee, making necessary investigations of bus accidents and completing accident reports.
  10. Responsible for the preparation and monitoring of the annual department budget and purchases.
  11. Responsible for monitoring road conditions during times of inclement weather and assisting the CFO in making a determination of district closure.

Physical/Visual Activities or Demands: Physical/visual activities or demands that are commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.

  1. Walking, sitting, talking, hearing.
  2. Normal attention with clarity of vision at 20 inches or less as well as 20 feet or more, is required.
  3. Light physical demand with regular lifting of very light-to-light (1 to 25 lbs.) items by hand.

Environmental/Atmospheric Conditions: Environmental and atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.

Primarily typical office conditions, but with some exposure to outside conditions. 

POSITION QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Education: Associate’s degree or two years of college required. Bachelor’s Degree is highly preferred. Thorough knowledge of a specialized or technical field such as student transportation, public transportation, and motor vehicle maintenance, involving skills knowledge plus the application of basic theory.

Experience: Requires a minimum of two years of experience in the field of student transportation and vehicle maintenance.  Requires a minimum of five years’ experience in the supervision of personnel and/or management.

Skills and Abilities which may be representative but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position:

  1. Apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations.
  2. Add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure. Perform the operations with common and decimal fractions. Compute ratio, rate, and percent.
  3. Perform reading, writing, and speaking at an advanced level.
  4. Must be proficient in the knowledge and application of the rules and regulations of the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Missouri Department of Transportation, and United States Department of Transportation governing student transportation.
  1. Must be familiar with local, county, and state traffic laws.
  2. Must demonstrate positive, effective “people skills” and the ability and personality to work with colleagues, parents, other individuals, community groups and organizations.
  3. Must have working knowledge of Word and Excel software programs. Experience with VersaTrans or other routing software, communications software (such as Blackboard), and general ledger software is preferred.

License(s)/Certification(s) Required: Missouri State Chauffeur’s License, CDL, Bus Permit and Trainer Certification

Salary based on the Administrator salary schedule.

Salary Range: $76,698.00-$120,095.00
