PURPOSE
The Accountant will oversee processing all transaction in the district’s accounting system, ensuring compliance with district policy and generally accepted accounting principles. The Accountant will also help implement and enforce a strong system of internal controls to ensure the district’s assets are properly safeguarded and that financial transactions are recorded in an accurate manner. This position will be responsible for monitoring and processing accounting functions/compliance across muliple programs and District-wide.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
• Assist with preparation of Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR)
• Review and approve all transactions of the district related to purchasing and stores inventory
• Prepare journal entries received from schools and within own area of responsibility
• Ensure all transactions are properly accounted for in the District’s accounting system
• Maintain the District’s chart of accounts and set up new accounts as needed
• Write accounts payable checks and work with vendors on more complicated payment issues
• Process and upload invoices relating to the District’s contract for outsourced substitutes
• Keep up on all relevant accounting pronouncements by GASB and other authoritative bodies
• Work with Transportation Department to get accurate bus counts for October and February, respectively, for application of State Transportation Aid
• Update fixed assets schedule annually
• Review and audit petty cash in schools on a regular basis
• Reconcile various bank accounts monthly
• Maintain accurate district grant records and work with district staff wishing to pursue grants and donations
• Provide BusinessPLUS training to staff as necessary
• Assist with procurement card review and approval process as necessary
• Assist the Director of Business Services and Senior Accountant on various projects as needed
Performs other duties as necessary to support the mission and vision of Columbia Public School District.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, or a related field
Experience is preferred, but we are willing to train the right candidate. Excellent communication skills, organizational ability, knowledge of governmental accounting practices and standards.

Travel between district facilities. Moderate amount of travel, both in and out of state.
Attendance: Consistent and regular attendance is an essential function of this position. Expected to attend Board meetings and other District events throughout the community.
