Director of Secondary Education
Purpose Statement
The Director of Secondary Education serves as part of the Academic Team and as a member of the District Leadership Team. This role coordinates all improvement efforts for the middle schools (6–8), high schools (9–12), and the alternative high school. The Director provides instructional leadership and brings strong knowledge of best practices in curriculum and instruction, program evaluation, budget management, and data analysis. The position leads improvement efforts toward identified instructional targets by motivating and mentoring building-level administrators and facilitating systemic change strategies with an emphasis on progressive educational practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate all improvement efforts for middle schools (6–8), high schools (9–12), and the alternative high school
- Facilitate regular meetings for secondary building leaders
- Support and monitor the school improvement process for middle and high schools
- Oversee programming and improvement efforts at the alternative high school
- Evaluate middle and high school principals
- Collaborate regularly with District athletic directors
- Identify and develop improvement goals for secondary schools
- Provide professional learning to secondary building leaders
- Problem-solve issues at the middle and high school levels
- Facilitate the Early College program
- Serve as the district liaison for the CAPS and Lewis & Clark programs
- Support all aspects of college and career readiness K–12
- Lead improvement efforts toward identified instructional targets
- Motivate and mentor building-level administrators
- Facilitate systemic change strategies with a focus on progressive educational practices
- Support curriculum, instruction, data analysis, program evaluation, and budget management
- Collaborate with diverse stakeholder groups including teachers, families, community members, and administrators
Job Requirements / Basic Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Education or a related field (Doctorate preferred)
- Successful teaching experience at the secondary level (minimum 5 years)
- Successful building principal experience (minimum 5 years, at least 2 as a building principal)
- Successful district-level leadership experience preferred (2 years preferred)
- Strong proficiency in Google Suite and Microsoft Office software
- Ability to supervise others and provide coaching and feedback
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Experience with strategic/action plan implementation and monitoring
- Demonstrates sound judgment, social competency, and resourcefulness
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong time management skills
- Ability to problem-solve with a diverse group of stakeholders
- Experience with school improvement efforts and proven success increasing data/achievement under leadership
Work Environment
- District administrative setting with regular collaboration across schools and departments
- Frequent meetings, school visits, and leadership team engagement
- High-level instructional leadership, evaluation, and strategic planning responsibilities
Education and Experience
- Required: Master's Degree in Education or related field
- Preferred: Doctorate
